Scrimshaw is the technique of engraving bone or ivory and enhancing the designs with pigment, similar to the art of tattooing. In this 4 week class, we will cover the history of scrimshaw, materials and techniques. Students will learn the techniques of scribed scrimshaw, engraved scrimshaw, and carving with a flexshaft on a variety of materials like bone, tagua nut, plastic, amber, and mother of pearl. We will also cover safe material handling and tool sharpening.

Materials needed: scribe, india ink, respirator or N95 mask

Materials suggested: additional tagua nut (vegetable ivory), other materials that can be used for scrimshaw: horn, shed antler, ostrich egg, emu egg, acrylic, nylon (switch plate covers). Universal work holder, sandpaper

Materials provided: tagua nut slices, beeswax, felt buffing wheel for flex shaft, carbon paper

Students will need an internet connection as this class will be taught online via Zoom.

Tuition and fees for classes at the Baltimore Jewelry Center are subsidized in large part by grants and contributions from our community. The rate that we charge for each class covers only 60% of the true cost to run the class. In an effort to more equitably fund our classes and encourage more donations to subsidize our programs, we are now pricing classes on a sliding scale. If you are able to do so, please consider paying a higher rate for your class. The difference you pay will be considered a donation and you will be issued a donation receipt.
