Jewelry has adorned the human experience for millennia, connecting people across cultures, histories, and stories. In this 12-week course, students will dive into timeless jewelry-making techniques that date back to antiquity, gaining hands-on experience with methods that continue to inspire contemporary jewelers today. Participants will explore and practice scrimshaw, chasing and repoussé, loop-in-loop chain making, and the carving of soft stones, bone, and shell. By learning these enduring skills, students will gain a unique understanding of the materials and craftsmanship that defined ancient jewelry, while developing their own artistic voice in translating these techniques into modern designs. This course is ideal for both beginners and experienced makers looking to deepen their technical repertoire and connect with the rich heritage of jewelry traditions.

No experience necessary.

Tuition and fees for classes at the Baltimore Jewelry Center are subsidized in large part by grants and contributions from our community. The rate that we charge for each class covers only 60% of the true cost to run the class. In an effort to more equitably fund our classes and encourage more donations to subsidize our programs, we are now pricing classes on a sliding scale. If you are able to do so, please consider paying a higher rate for your class. The difference you pay will be considered a donation and you will be issued a donation receipt.
