Stone Setting: Bezels

Kyle Johnson | Tuesdays I 6:30 - 10:00pm I July 7 - August 11

Sign up deadline: June 17

This course focuses on building and setting stones using round bezel settings fabricated from scratch. Students will construct bezels using a range of methods, including forming over mandrels and other shaping techniques. The course will also explore modifying the bezel—cutting, shaping, and opening areas to introduce a prong-like feel and allow more light into the stone. Students will complete at least one finished piece, such as a ring or pendant, while gaining a clear understanding of how to build and manipulate bezel settings beyond a standard closed form. The goal is to introduce a more structural approach to stone setting while reinforcing strong foundational techniques.

Prerequisite: Metals + Jewelry 1 or equivalent experience. Materials kit provided. Registration includes a $50 materials fee.

Tuition and fees for classes at the Baltimore Jewelry Center are subsidized in large part by grants and contributions from our community. The rate that we charge for each class covers only 60% of the true cost to run the class. In an effort to more equitably fund our classes and encourage more donations to subsidize our programs, we are now pricing classes on a sliding scale. If you are able to do so, please consider paying a higher rate for your class. The difference you pay will be considered a donation and you will be issued a donation receipt.
