Matthew B. Crawford, Shop Class as Soul Craft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work (2010)

Our second book club pick is Shop Class as Soul Craft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work (2010). Matt Crawford, who holds a PhD in political philosophy from the University of Chicago and has worked as both an electrician and a motorcycle mechanic, examines mass preparation for white-collar work that has sidelined education in trades and hand-skills, which come with distinct intellectual pleasures and material-world competence. Crawford’s narrative and philosophical exploration of the meaning of work feels as urgent as ever.

Christine Manganaro, PhD, is a cultural and intellectual historian and Associate Dean of Liberal Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her research focuses on scientific and popular conceptions of race and heredity in twentieth century America. Fascinated by metal and textiles alike, her metalsmithing practice juxtaposes industrial techniques with natural materials and explores sewn construction.

Participants will need a secure internet connection as this book club will meet via Zoom.

Book Club costs are on a sliding scale for $10, $25, and $40. This is the cost for the entire session (5 meetings). $40 will sponsor another member of the BJC community member to join the Book Club. If these price points do not work for you, or if you want to sponsor more than one person, email us at info@baltimorejewelrycenter.org.
