This course focuses on the use of steel, typically considered a non-precious metal, in combination with precious metals for the fabrication of jewelry. Students learn to solder steel wire and sheet with gold and silver solder for construction as well as surface embellishment. Linear structures and armatures will be created through small scale wire welding. Chasing and texturing on steel, small scale forging, and color methods will also be explored. Prerequisite: Metals + Jewelry 1 or equivalent experience.
Tuition and fees for classes at the Baltimore Jewelry Center are subsidized in large part by grants and contributions from our community. The rate that we charge for each class covers only 60% of the true cost to run the class. In an effort to more equitably fund our classes and encourage more donations to subsidize our programs, we are now pricing classes on a sliding scale. If you are able to do so, please consider paying a higher rate for your class. The difference you pay will be considered a donation and you will be issued a donation receipt.
